IPM DUBAI TRIPLES IN SIZE IN THREE YEARS
British, French, Italian, Kenyan, Spanish, Tanzanian and United States companies debut at region’s largest horticultural exhibition

Dubai, UAE, February 25, 2009: This year’s International Plants Expo Middle East (IPM DUBAI) has grown to include over 240 tenants, tripling the exhibition’s size since its inaugural event three years ago. Organisers believe that the increasing popularity of the annual trade show, which opens from March 3-5 at Dubai’s Airport Expo, is a clear indication of the health of the regional plant and flower industries and one that underscores the rising activity in the import and export of horticultural products.

IPM DUBAI was first staged as an industry platform in 2006 and featured 90 exhibitors demonstrating the latest developments in horticulture and industry related technology, maintenance, logistics and sales and promotion. Last year’s show attracted over 2,500 trade guests from 50 countries, all keen to visit the plethora of pavilions showcasing a wide variety of flora; including cut flowers, indoor and outdoor plants, ornamental plants and tree nursery goods.

“We are expecting visitor footfall at this year’s IPM expo to exceed 3,000 over the three days, as it is clear that the demand for flowers and plants and their related products and services is booming across the region, despite the global financial conditions,” said Michael Müller, Managing Director of planetfair Dubai LLC, joint organisers of the exhibition.

For IPM DUBAI 2009, a number of new exhibitors will be making their debut and there are also new official country representations from the UK, France, Italy, Kenya, Spain, Tanzania and the United States, all revealing their countries’ plant industry wares. Germany is also making its presence with the largest pavilion at the expo, with two of its exhibitors, Kräss GlasCon and conflora, having signed up for the German Greenhouse Project; a partnership that aims to capitalise on the regional demand for turnkey horticultural enterprises.

The UK delegation is typical of the new tenants keen to capitalise on the strong regional market conditions, as - following a successful group visit to the event in 2007 - the UK Commercial Horticultural Association decided to lead a British National Pavilion for the first time. Italy is also looking to make in-roads into the UAE’s ornamental plants industry, with tenants at the country’s pavilion specialising in ornamental plants. The Italian pavilion is headed by a commission from the Trade Promotion Section of the UAE’s Italian embassy; a governmental agency responsible for trade and industrial co-operation between its country and the rest of the world.

“Over 60 percent of last year’s tenants have re-registered for this year following the success of IPM DUBAI 2008 and these exhibitors attend from all over the world,” said Mr. Egon Galinnis, Managing Director Messe Essen, co-organisers of the show. “With new country pavilions marking their debut each consecutive year, IPM DUBAI has developed a truly international flavour,” he added.

IPM’s location close to Dubai International Airport has been an undoubted factor in both its and the regional market’s success, with the ‘cool chain’ facilities on hand at the Dubai Flower Centre meaning that perishables are not subject to the temperature fluctuations which can impair quality. The state-of-the-art control system has helped to secure Dubai’s status as the regional hub for imports and exports of plants and flowers; meaning that the IPM expo will be the largest yet held.

“The strength of the regional plant and flower markets is proving to be an extremely attractive proposition for both importers and exporters of horticultural produce,” said Mr. Müller. “Each year since its inception, IPM DUBAI has grown in stature and plays an increasingly pivotal role in showcasing horticultural products and services from across the globe. We anticipate another extremely busy exhibition,” he added.

This year, a new expo dedicated to edible plant produce will be launched alongside IPM DUBAI 2009. World of Perishables (WOP DUBAI) will focus on the regional fruit and vegetable market; imports of which rose by almost 40 per cent to more than US$ one billion since 2007, according to a recent planetfair report.

IPM DUBAI is based on IPM ESSEN in Germany; the world’s number one event for plants and plant technology. This year, the European event attracted 1,450 exhibitors and 60,588 visitors from 91 nations. IPM DUBAI 2009 is held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports. The international expo is backed by Dubai Airports, Dubai Flower Centre, the Ministry of Environment and Water and the Dubai Municipality, Department of Parks and Horticulture.
